Just Thinking Out Loud | NFL Week 6 Notes

  • Well, the Falcons are the only undefeated team left, but let’s find out what a dome team does late in the year when it gets in some cold weather situations. Ala, Green Bay, New York, or maybe even Chicago.  Too early to crown anyone yet.
  • Nice bounce back game for the Jets, and yes, the AFC East is at it weakest in some time , but until this team gets some weapons on the offensive side of the ball, I can’t take it serious.  But hey, keep running it Rex, you never know.
  • Btw, speaking of the AFC East, the Dolphins are feisty.  I’m not ready to eat crow on Tannehill, but they’re playing above expectation for sure. Nice job all around….
  • Andy Reid’s seat is as hot as its ever been. High expectations were once again  placed on this team, and as of right now, they’re failing, AGAIN. Turnovers kill in this league. They better get back to taking caring of the ball, getting McCoy his carries and letting those DE’s get to the QB..
  • Cowboys. Jekyll. Hyde. As poorly coached a team there is in this league right now.  Another 13 penalties this week.  And playing conservative for the long field goal???? Didn’t he learn from his division rival’s mistakes (Coughlin vs. the Eagles)???  Same ol same ol in the D.  Scary thing is they have a bunch of weapons on each side of the ball, so a losing season is inexcusable.
  • I still like the Vikings.  They were due for a let down.  Decent team.
  • I can’t say the same about the Bucs, who beat up on a listless Chiefs team.  We all can at least say we called it, as I remember our disdain for the Chiefs running high in the preview column.
  • We all also agreed, and still do, that the Niners are not, repeat, ARE NOT, for real with that guy Smith playing QB.  Don’t believe me?  Well 3 picks and 5 sacks don’t help his cause.  And as for the Big Blue? They’re simply the most resilient team in the game. Huge early season test and passed it while takin a slim lead in the division.
  • And finally, a special shout out to the real A-Rod.  The best players step up in the biggest moments. Here’s a guy whose team is under .500 and going into a road matchup vs. undefeated Houston. Every pundit had written the Pack off.  So what he do? You know what he did. 6 Touchdowns. Now sit down and shush, hater.

AB:
  • Aaron Rodgers going for 6 TDs on a stout/ J.J. Watted up Texans D is a big statement to make for a championship squad on the ropes. I know for a fact that the Pack, Pizza Hut execs and fantasy owners needed this one badly. 3-3 is way better than 2-4.
  • Super kudos to RG3 for coming back from a vicious hit last week to run shop over a Vikes team that came in with some mojo. 138 yards rushing total on the day, including a 78 yarder that clocked in as the longest run by a NFL QB since Kordell Stewart in 1996 (80 yards). Dude is fearless and earning leadership stripes day by day.
  • Newsflash: Brady Quinn still ain’t ready for primetime. Notre Dame might be back in the polls, but Quinn still can’t get past his past. Plus I think he has striking similarities to that kid Blake who won the Glee Project (above). Maybe dude is better off singing or playing water polo, cause a top shelf QB he is not.

  • Could the Jets be in for a nice run? I know these parraels are extreme, but I liken it to when the Giants lost Jeremy Shockey to injury back in 2008 and it eventually led to both better team chemistry and eventually a Super Bowl title.  Could the Santonio Holmes injury carry the same blessing in disguise? Not saying the Jets don’t need Holmes offensively (because they still have practice squad offensive talent), but professionalism and camaraderie do go a long way in this league. Monday night against the Texans was already a competitive showing than most people thought and after a big win at home Sunday, maybe the Jets have just enough to make this season something other than a complete washout.
  • Horrible to hear about the fan who got stabbed prior to the Giants game at Candlestick. I know its east versus west,  blue vs red, and you’re in Cali and all, but this type of thing shouldn’t be happening at all on stadium grounds.
  • Like a Sinatra song at a wedding (Summer Wind is always right) or a family heirloom passed down, Ronde Barber is timeless. Who at 37 still runs back INTs for 78 yards? Only Ronde. If you asked us a decade ago who would’ve ended up with the greater playing legacy, majority might have gone to Tiki. But now, you could argue that Ronde even as a defensive back, has had a more memorable, durable, and albeit less controversial career than that of his NY brethren. Plus it also always helps when you can tote that SB ring at the family reunions. Great day for a class act still going strong.
  • Lastly, no more shots at Brandon Weeden. He held is own against the red rifle and on his birthday, secured his first win. He’s already surpassed Chris Weinke in my mind as the best 29-year old rookie ever.
  • This is exactly why the Giants need to still be talked about as the best team in football. I know their defense hasn’t stepped up like they should have considering their talent, but when it does this team can play any style and beat anybody. The Giants are also 10-0 when Bradshaw rushes for 100+ yards.
  • This is also exactly why no matter how stout that Niners defense is and how good their run game looks, I can’t trust them against a good defense in the playoffs because Alex Smith is their quarterback.
  • Russell Wilson actually threw a game-winning touchdown pass that wasn’t influenced by the officials.
